A first chapter critique is the first step to making sure that an author's book packs the right amount of pizazz! This service is offered to help an author figure out if they'll successfully hook their readers in the first few pages of their novel. I will check for "the hook." The goal of the first chapter critique is to answer the question: Is this the kind of book that will keep readers engaged, or will they flip through the first few pages and abandon the book with a quickness?
The Process: I offer first chapter critiques on the first 5000 words of your book. Depending on the number of words, this may include more than the first chapter, and that's fine. I will go through your submitted pages and offer a detailed report on what is working and what's not. The report is designed to highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the beginning of your story and will include suggested changes you can make.
The first chapter critique checks for:
The Hook
Character development
Pacing
Dialogue discrepancies
